Hub Technology

HUB DESIGN INNOVATION

6 PAWLS DESIGN
Rear hub houses an engagement system of 6 pawls and 48 or 60 ratchets that is staggered into 2 groups of 3 pawls. At any single time, 3 pawls are always engaged while the 3 other pawls are preloaded. This allows the hub to have a responsive 3 or 3.75 degree engagement, translating into faster and more efficient power transfer.

3 CLAWS ON EACH PAWL maximizes contact points while spreading the driving force over a larger surface area, thereby prolonging the life span of the cassette body.

6 PAWLS AND 3-DEGREE ENGAGEMENT

Hub Flange Spacing and Spoke Hole Diameter (P.C.D)

One of the largest factors that make Irwin wheelsets stiff is its wide flange spacing and spoke hole flange diameter (P.CD). In simple geometric terms, the triangle created by the spokes and hub in an Irwin wheelset is wider at the base of the triangle. At 55.6mm flange distance, it is the one of the widest hub spacing available.

Given the rim profile remains the same, the 58mm P.C.D allows us to use shorter spokes, which further enhances the stiffness and responsiveness of the hub.

With our 6 pawl 3 degree engagement hub, we pushed the flanges out as much as possible while balancing spoke tension between the drive side and non drive side. The drive side flange’s bracing angle of 3 degrees provides a perfect balance with the 5 degrees bracing angle on the non drive side.

Future proof press fit end cap design

Inheriting all the design features from the road hub, the road disc brake hub also features future proof press fit end cap design. Interchangeable end cap can continue to evolve with new thru axle standards.

Oversize Bearings and Shoulder Axles

Bearing plays a central role in a functioning hub. Smaller bearings might save weight, but can come at the expense of decreased durability. Not only the bearing size but also where the bearings are placed within the hub shell can also affect the durability of the bearings. We have designed our bearings to be strategically placed to avoid being right under the flange to prevent direct force for impacting the bearings. Complementing the oversized bearings are the shoulder axles, which prevents any play on the moving parts of the hub.
